The clerk went out of her way to get me a rescheduled appointment.

I have worked for and utilized the San Angelo VA Clinic services as a veteran.

Much more responsive than other VA offices in the Western United States

After several failed attempts to contact her, the nurse just happed to walk by. When the admin clerk approached her, she wouldn't make eye contact or speak with me, she simply told the clerk that see didn't know I was here.

I'm hoping this was just my bad luck, otherwise I have to say that you can really tell the competent members of the staff that care about the patients from the ones just cashing a paycheck.

The medical teams need work. My first doctor wondered why I needed to get my depression looked at if I wasn't homeless or unemployed.

The mental health team and PACTs are extremely responsive to veteran-patient needs. They attempt to ensure that veterans are cared for. On occasion, veterans fall through the cracks due to manning shortages or changes in personnel, but this can be expected in any medical facility.

Given the scope within which it operates, which is as a medical clinic performing routine healthcare examinations, it is does extremely well. This includes the fact that it has thousands of local veterans assigned to it for care.

This clinic is not designed to handle emergencies. It does not have a pharmacy, nor does it have urgent care services. On occasion, some veteran-patients arrive to the clinic with the mistaken concept that they will be covered for emergency services by going through the clinic; all they end up doing is delaying emergency care. Also, the personnel and staff cannot be faulted for long delays due to a veteran arriving without an appointment. Once again, it is not designed for such arrivals. Staff does, however, attempt to work all arrivals into the day's visitors.

This clinic is part of the West Texas VA Healthcare System based in Big Spring, TX, and that system does have problems with leadership and staffing.

The mental health team is spot on.

Showed up for an appointment with the nurse. 45 minutes after my appointment and after having seen almost a dozen people who came in after me get seen, I went to the desk and asked about the delay. The lady behind the desk was surprised I was still there and tried to get the nurse on their compute system.
